Who’s No. 1? Today it’s Mahan

Call it, “The Crash of the Titans.”

Tiger Woods will keep his No. 1world ranking for at least one more week, mostly by deafult. After he slogged it around to the tune of 77, finishing 18-over-par, his worst ever as a pro, Phil Mickelson could climb to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking just by finishing fourth.

He started the day two shots back of that mark, but missed fairways, greens, and at times the Earth all day, ballooning to a 78 that left him tied for tied for 46th at 3-over. (Oh well Lefty, better luck next week at the PGA Championship.)

Among those who looked like they wanted to win a golf tournament today, Hunter Mahan was flawless, carding a bogey-free 64 that included five birdies in a seven-hole stretch on the front nine. He zoomed past third-round leaders Ryan Palmer and Sean O’Hair, who made no move on the back nine after Mahan seized the lead by the turn to claim his second PGA title of 2010.

The PGA circus will more north up the road next week to its final major, the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

South Africa’s Retief Goosen shot a sparkling 65 Sunday to jump into third place.
