WGC-CA tees off in Miami

The World Golf Championships bring the best golfers in the world together, something no other events outside the majors can boast.

The trouble is, Tiger Woods never gives any of them a chance to win.

The World Number One’s triumphant comeback tour continues Thursday when the event tees off at the Doral Blue Monster course in Miami, Florida. After playing for the first time in nine months at the Accenture Match Play Championships two weeks ago, Woods seeks his 16th win in a WGC event (he boasts a 50% win rate in those prestigious events) against an 80-player field that includes 57 of the top 59 players in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy is the defending WGC-CA champion, and also won the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, giving him plenty on the line to defend.

Warm, dry conditions are expected throughout the four days of the event, so expect quick putting surfaces to challenge the players. Doral’s bunkers are also considered some of the toughest to play out of on the PGA Tour.

The Blue Monster’s 18th hole, a 467-yard par-4 that doglegs left around a lake and has a narrow landing area for drives, is annually one of the most difficult holes the pros play all year, on any tour, on any continent, and the hole itself can rachet up the amount of drama already in place on Sunday should the tournament come down to the 72nd hole.
