Weir takes 1 stroke lead into Deutsche Bank final round

The winds came up in Boston, but the scores at the top of the leaderboard stayed low at the PGA TOUR Deutsche Bank Championship.
Mike Weir, author of a first-round 61, birdied the par-5 18th hole at the TPC of Boston on Sunday to take a one-hot lead into Monday’s final round. He’ll be paired with Colombia’s Camilo Villegas, who threw everything he had at the course and the field on Sunday, firing a 63 that took him from a tie for 22nd at the start of the day to second place.
Vijay Singh (69 on Sunday) and Sergio Garcia (68) are three back at 14-under 199 and will be paired together in the second-to-last group. Singh beat Garcia in a playoff at last week’s Barclays, and they are 1-2 in the points standings for the FedEx Cup title. The winner takes home a $10 million payday.
Clustered in a tie for fifth at 13-under are Jim Furyk, Ernie Els and Ben Crane, who matched Villegas’ 63 on Sunday. Crane’s round came just in time, as he sits 92nd in the FedEx points standings, and only the top 70 will move on to play in next week’s BMW Championship outside of Chicago.
Second-round leader Tim Clark of South Africa shot 73 on Sunday and dropped into a tie for eighth with Americans Heath Slocum and Briny Baird.
