Weir shoots 61 to lead the Deutsche Bank Championship

Vijay Singh was probably thinking about hoisting the FedEx Cup trophy when he putted out Thursday.
After winning last week’s Barclays event in the PGA TOUR “Playoffs” and assuming the top spot in the FedEx points race, “The Big Fijian” went out early in the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship and posted a tidy 7-under round of 64 that was good for the lead for most of the day.
Then he got some company.
First, John Merrick took advantage of soft conditions and little wind to post a 64 of his own. Then, Canadian Mike Weir blew the doors off both of them. He birdied six of his first seven holes, then added four more birdies on the back nine for a 10-under par round of 61, his lowest ever on TOUR and one that matched the TPC of Boston course record.
The course played as easy as it could,” Weir told The Golf Channel afterwards. “And it was nice to see some putts to fall, it’s the best i’ve rolled it all year.
Briny Baird and Heath Slocum later joined Singh and Merrick at 64. Slocum (No. 79 in the points standings) and Eric Axley (No. 72), who shot 65, were among very few of those “on the bubble”, at risk of not qualifying for next week’s BMW Championship for the top 70 only, to make a move.
Among a big group at 5-uinder 66 are Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim and Kevin Streelman, who also participated in last week’s playoff at The Barclays won by Singh.
