Villegas wins a title, but Singh takes the Cup
Camilo Villegas won $1.5 million for winning the TOUR Championship on Sunday in a playoff.
Vijay Singh won $10 million for finishing tied for 22nd some 16 shots back.
Huh?
Based on his wins in the first two Fedx Cup Playoffs events, Singh’s finish tallied him enough points to win the second annual FedEx Cup and the big payday. The outcome was nearly pre-ordained. All Singh had to do was avoid finishing in one of the last two places if Villegas indeed won at East Lake Golf Club.
At least the Colombian held up his end of the bargain. Villegas, the winner of the last PGA TOUR event, the BMW Championship, fashioned a nifty 4-under 66 that included eight birdies, including one at the 17th hole — the only birdie all day at that hole — to climb into a tie for the lead at 7-under with Sergio Garcia.
Garcia had a birdie putt on 18 to win outright. The 22-footer slid just right, sending the Spaniard, who shot 71 on Sunday, and the Colombian back to the 18th tee. Garcia pushed his tee ball way right, while Villegas hit his safely on the green. Garcia couldn’t get up and down and Villegas two-putted for the victory.
Phil Mickelson, after failing to get up-and-down out of a greenside bunker on 16, finished in a tie for third one stroke back with U.S. Ryder Cup hero Anthony Kim.
With the FedEx Cup season now over, PGA TOUR players will play through the first weekend of November to ensure their spot in the top on the money list and their playing priviledges for next year. The TOUR heads to Verona, New York next week for the Turning Stone Championship.
