US Open Golf Exempt List Announced
The 108th US Open Golf takes place between June 12 to June 15 2008 on the South Course at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
The USGA have announced 72 players who will be exempt from the qualification tournaments.
The method of choosing players who get automatic entry is complex but we will try to explain it.
The Top 50 players in the world rankings at the cut of point will get entry into the US Open.
Another 14 players were exempt from US Open Qualifying based on their world ranking and money lists on the US PGA and European Tour.
Guys who left it late to get into the US Open include Rod Pampling who although he lost a 2 shot lead to Phil Mickelson at the Crowne Plaza Invitational his second place shot him from 69 to 47 in the world rankings and he avoids the dreaded 36 holes jn on day qualifier tournament on June 2nd 2008.
Other players of note who got in via their world ranking include British Golfer Ian Poulter, Stuart Appleby, Robert Karlsson, Sean O’Hair, Martin Kaymer, Justin Leonard, Mike Weir and J.B. Holmes.
Players who got in via their form this season include Ryuji Imada, Anthony Kim and Jeff Quinney who got into the US open for being in the top 10 on the PGA Tour money list.
The top two players in the European Tour Order of Merit also get cards for the US Open. The current top 2 are Miguel Angel Jimenez and Oliver Wilson.. The two players played out a playoff at the BMW Players Championship at Wentworth this past weekend.
So in total seventy two players got free entry into the US Open. Tiger Woods got exemptions in an amazing 10 categories!! Also exempt is the current champ Angel Cabrera.

The list contains players in the first category the were eligible for exemption
U.S. Open champions (In Last 10 years): Angel Cabrera, Geoff Ogilvy, Michael Campbell, Retief Goosen, Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods, Lee Janzen.
PGA Championship winners (last five years): Vijay Singh, Shaun Micheel.
Winner and runner-up of the 2007 U.S. Amateur: Michael Thompson.
British Open champions (wihin 5 years): Padraig Harrington, Todd Hamilton, Ben Curtis.
Masters champions (last five years): Trevor Immelman, Zach Johnson, Phil Mickelson.
2007 U.S. Senior Open champion: Brad Bryant.
2008 Players Championship winner: Sergio Garcia.
Top 15 finishers and ties from the 2007 U.S. Open: Niclas Fasth, David Toms, Bubba Watson, Nick Dougherty, Scott Verplank, Jerry Kelly, Justin Rose, Stephen Ames, Paul Casey, Hunter Mahan, Steve Stricker, Aaron Baddeley.
2007 Tour Championship Field: Camilo Villegas, Jonathan Byrd.
Top 15 players from the 2007 European Tour money list: Henrik Stenson, Andres Romero, Soren Hansen, Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie, Richard Sterne.
Top 10 players from the 2008 PGA Tour money list on May 26: Ryuji Imada, Anthony Kim, Jeff Quinney.
Top two players from the 2007 Japan Golf Tour money list, provided they were in the top 75 in the world ranking: Toru Taniguchi, Shingo Katayama
Any multiple winners on the PGA Tour from April 27, 2007 through June 1, 2008: Daniel Chopra.
Top two players from the 2008 European Tour money list on May 26: Miguel Angel Jimenez, Oliver Wilson.
Top 30 players from the 2007 PGA Tour money list: K.J. Choi, Rory Sabbatini, Adam Scott, Mark Calcavecchia, Woody Austin, Brandt Snedeker, Charles Howell III, Ernie Els, Tim Clark, Boo Weekley, John Rollins, Stewart Cink, Steve Flesch, Robert Allenby, Brett Wetterich, Luke Donald, Heath Slocum.
Finally if they are in the Top 50 in the world ranking on May 26:
