US Masters 1991 Ian Woosnam Did It His Way
My all time favourite US Masters was 1991 when Ian Woosnam won the coveted Masters Green Jacket by thinking outside the box and trying something different.
Many a players dreams of winning the US Masters has been thwarted by the 18th at Augusta, the hole doglegs right and under pressure it can be hard to hit the fairway.
The ideal tee shot is a fade, trouble is you risk shooting it straight into the trees on the right, especially when the nerves are jangling. The biggest dangers on the hole are the two bunkers on the left.
In the 1991 Masters Ian Woosnam showed how a little imagination can be used to conquer this formidable hole.
Woosnam was tied with Tom Watson coming to the final hole, Watson struck his tee shot into the trees. Woosie afraid that he might end up in the same predicament decided the best maneuver was to attack the hole, he blasted a driver straight over the fairway traps, a massive 275 carry right onto the members practice ground, this left just an 8 iron to the green. He had trusted his power and avoided the conventional approach with its inherent dangers.
Ian played up to the green and two putted for his par, this was enough to beat of the challenge of Watson.
Imagination and the courage to try something different secured Ian Woosnam victory in the 1991 US Masters.
