Unknowns lead the US Open Golf but tiger not far away

Day 1 of the US Open Golf Championship

After Day 1 of the US Open Golf Championship 2008 there are a few unfamiliar names at the top of the leaderboard after a hard day at the Torrey Pines GC.

Nationwide tour players Kevin Streelman and Justin Hicks were the unexpected first round leaders after both hitting 3 under pars 68s on day 1.

They lead by one stoke ahead of Rocco Mediate Eric Axley Geoff Ogilvy and Stuart Appleby.

The best placed Englishmen was Lee westwood a further shot back, and he is in a group which includes Swede Robert Karlsson and Ernie Els.

Tiger Woods had a disasterous start to his US Open with a double bogey on the first, he got back to 1 under but on 14 he double bogeyed again, he even 3 putted which he had not done for 2 years. Tiger playing his first tournament since a knee op he had straight after the masters, is obviously a bit rusty. That said Tiger Woods is only 4 shots back so very much in touch at +1.
The dream team group which Tiger Woods played in included the world number 2 Phil Mickelson and World number 3 Adam Scott, also struggled Phil Mickelson ended on par and Scott 2 over par. All 3 are still in contention and will play together again today in round 3.

My Tip Luke Donald was looking good to lead after round 1 being 2 under at 14, but two bogey holes left him even par for the day, but I still think he can be fighter for the title on Sunday.
Other Europeans did not fare so well Sergio Garcia carded 76, Padraig Harrington , Ian Poulter and Nick Dougherty, took 78, while Paul Casey, Justin Rose and Colin Montgomerie all got 79, and will be fighting to make the cut today.
