UK Immigration Ruling Could Affect Major Golf Tournaments

Organisers of leading UK sports events have expressed concerns that a Government revision of immigration legislation could be detrimental to Britain’s ability to attract the best overseas stars.

The rule changes, introduced by the Border and Immigration Agency, classify sports men and women as Tier Five Temporary Workers. The proposals are meant to simplify entry into the UK but concerns over regulations accompanying a Tier Five status have brought a united response from organisers of the Open golf championship, and other major UK sporting events.

Peter Dawson chief executive of The Royal and Ancient who run the Open Championship made this statement:

“We appreciate that the Government have a job to do, but it has to ensure that the changes do not make the running of major events more difficult for organisations and the people who take part. Players taking part in our amateur competitions also come from all over the world and can play in several events while they are here. If every event has to be a sponsor, the cost and bureaucracy involved would be horrendous.”
