Time running out for Monty’s Open hopes

Colin Montgomerie is in serious danger of missing out on what would be his 22nd consecutive Open Championship, held this year at the Royal St George in Sandwich. The Scottish veteran had a chance to earn his place last week at Sunningdale, only to shoot a horrible six-over par and finish rock bottom and way off the 10 qualifying places.

An opening round 71 left Monty in need of a stunning round to climb back up the table, only to suffer two bogeys and two double bogeys on his way to five-over. The disappointment came just days after his shocking Welsh Open campaign at Celtic Manor, finishing a horrendous 15-over-par for the week.

Although last year’s victorious Ryder Cup captain was far from happy with his round at Sunningdale, Monty will still have a couple more opportunities to secure his invitation to another Open when he competes in the French and Scottish Opens. Top-five finishes in either tournament would be enough to make sure Monty doesn’t miss an Open for ths first time in 22-years. There is also the mini-money list option, the next chance for Monty being next week’s Italian Open. As it stands though, he’s unlikely to feature in the British Open betting.

“It’s disappointing, but I will be trying everything, as usual,” he said.

It’s only six years since Montgomerie finished second behind a rampant Tiger Woods and plenty of British fans will be hoping the popular Scot can have another crack at the tournament.
