The Barclays Golf Preview 2008

When this week’s PGA Tour event tees off Thursday, it begins a month-long stretch of “tournaments within a tournament.”
The Barclays is the first event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and after next month’s TOUR Championship in Atlanta, one player will walk away with the title and a $10 million payout. The event takes place at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. The pros will play the par-71 layout at 7,304 yards.
The top 144 in the yearlong FedEx standings were eligible for this week’s event; 136 of them are in the field. The top 120 after Sunday’s final round will be eligible to move on to next week’s “playoff round” at the Deutsche Bank Championship; hence the standings within the standings.
Tiger Woods earned the No. 1 playoff seed and had his playoff points reset to 100,000, but as he’s still home in Orlando recovering from knee surgery, Kenny Perry takes the de facto points lead (99,500). Lee Janzen, in at the 144th and final spot, was reset to 92,070.
Among the favorites include Perry, Phil Mickelson (3rd), who could atone for a major-less season with the FedEx Cup title, and Padraig Harrington (4th), who will be riding the momentum of winning the last two majors and three of the last six.
Steve Stricker, the defending Barclays champion (it was held at Westchester in Harrison, N.Y. last year) is 21st in the points.
