There is just 3 tournaments to go before Nick Faldo finalises his Team Europe for the Ryder Cup 2008. The SAS Masters started today so players just bubbling under the qualification for the Ryder Cup will have been wanting to put in a good first round to keep their Ryder Cup dream alive.

The SAS Masters 2008 is being played at the Arlandastad Golf Course in Stockholm, Sweden. We wrote earlier in the week about the Ryder Cup Team Europe Standings and I plan to follow the players still in with a chance of playing in the Ryder Cup this weekend.

First up Justin Rose, well he is not playing this weekend and he has still not tied up his Ryder Cup Place. He mentioned last week after the PGA Championship that he might come over to Europe to play some tournaments but he has not made it for this weekend. He will need to try to get points from the other remaining tournaments the The KLM Open or the final tournament the Johnnie Walker Championship. Also not playing this week are Ian Poulter, and Graeme MCDOWELL.

German Martin Kaymer is playing however and he is just one place off qualifying under the Euro Points Standings. Martin hit a 1 under par 69 which included 3 birdies and 2 bogeys, this leaves him 3 shots off the lead.

The 3 leaders after the first round include Nick DOUGHERTY who could still qualify for the Ryder Cup team he is placed 14th in the Euro Points Table but a win this weekend could shoot him into contention. He had a great round today with 1 birdies in the front 9, but his round really took a turn for the better with an amazing eagle 2 at par 4 441 yard 12th, and then 2 holes later another birdie at 14. Dougherty did not drop a shot and finished on 66 four under for the day.

He Shares the lead with Peter Hanson who enjoted playing in his homeland he got off to an amazing start with a 4 under 30 on the front 9. he back 9 let him down though with 2 bogeys otherwise he would have had the lead tonight.
Spains Pedro Linhart also had an up and down round with 7 birdies but he got pegged back with bogeys on holes 2 7 and 11.
