Romero and Vaughan Lead The Senior Open Championship After First Round
Argentine Eduardo Romero and American Bruce Vaughan have taken the early lead in The 2008 Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard at the Royal Troon Golf Course, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Romero and Vaughan both carded 68 to finish the day on 3 under par, Romero compiled a steady round with four birdies, the only blemish being a bogey on the par 5 sixth. Vaughan however had a bit of a roller coaster ride with birdies on 2 and for being wiped out by a double bogey 7 on the 6th followed by birdies on 8, 9 and 11 with another wipeout on 12 this time a triple bogey, luckily he emerged unscathed and birdied 13, 16 and 18 without dropping any more strokes.
For golfers are tied for third place on 69 one stroke behind the leaders, they are England’s Nick Job and the American Trio of Andy Bean, John Cook and Kirk Hanefeld.
A further stroke back in seventh place are another 5 players including tournament favourite Bernhard Langer and triple winner Tom Watson.
Shot of the day came from 1982 US Masters champion Craig Stadler who hit a hole in one at the 8th hole the 123 yard ‘Postage Stamp’, Stadler hit a pitching wedge off the tee and found the green, the ball bounced twice before rolling in. The prize for this amazing shot is 123 bottles of Hardys wine from a sponsor, one bottle for every yard.
Greg Norman set off badly with 6 bogeys in his first 10 holes but he recovered a little on the run in with birdies at the 13th and 18th to finish with a 4 over total of 75.
