Reflections from the ’09 Masters

It sometimes takes about a day at absorb what happens at a major championship, so here’s what I realized I saw at The Masters this week after putting down the bias goggles …

Angel Cabrera can flat out play, and if he wants to, can win more majors. He drives it a mile and pretty accurately, he putts in the clutch, and isn’t rattled by anything, as you could see from all the clutch shots he hit late. It seems that he’s ust out there hitting golf shots instead of focusing on what’s riding on it. I see a lot of Seve Ballesteros in him.

Kenny Perry — you’ve got to feel bad for him, but it seems he just isn’t a closer in the biggest events. And he admitted it in his post-round interview: “Great players get it done. Average players don’t and I’m average I guess.”

Think about it — all Perry had to do was par the 17th hole and victory was his. With a par and a 2-shot lead coming down 18, he could have hit 5-iron, 7-iron, wedge, taken his two putts put on his Green Jacket. Here’s hoping he gets another kick at the can, but at age 48 1/2, Perry seems have no more than one or two realistic chances to be a major winner.

Phil Mickelson — he didn’t lose. He just ran out of holes. Too bad he didn’t throw it into gear until mid-round on Friday.

Tiger Woods — one word: rusty. It was his first major since the knee surgery. The next one, the U.S. Open, is back at a place where he’s already won (Bethpage Black in New York). G’head and put him at the top of the list of favorites, along with Cabrera and the hot-handed Geoff Ogilvy.

Nostalgia — Was sad but accepting to see Gary Player bid adieu, but was sadder when Fuzzy Zoeller announced he too was hanging it up. A misunderstood fellow who gave back to the game every bit of what it gave him. It’s funny how nostalgic that places like Augusta and St. Andrews (where Jack Nicklaus appeared for the final time competitively) get golf fans. And Greg Norman has probably appeared at the Masters for the final time, he isn’t a past winner and would need another high finish in a major to qualify, since he doesn’t play full time to qualify for the money list categories.

Good gracious almighty, golf is such a great game.
