Preview Johnnie Walker Championship

This week the European PGA Tour is in Scotland for the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

This tournament will decide who gets the final automatic places in Nick Faldo’s 2008 European Ryder Cup Team to play at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky next month.

It is fitting that the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles Hotel will play host to The Ryder Cup in 2014.

So far seven of the Ryder Cup team have been decided Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Graeme McDowell have all booked their passage, most likely for the final three places are Justin Rose, Søren Hansen and Oliver Wilson but the trio of Martin Kaymer, Ross Fisher and Nick Dougherty are also in with a shout.

Automatic selection is only part of the Ryder Cup process, captain Nick Faldo also gets to pick two wild cards, and only he knows who they are likely to be however my money is on Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke after his emphatic win in The KLM Open last week.

The latest betting has Lee Westwood at favourite to win the Johnnie Walker at 11/1, with Justin Rose not far behind.

Scotland’s Marc Warren has great memories of Gleneagles having won this event last year.
