Picking the WGC bracket
In America, th Yanks get their fix of “bracket madness” during the 64-team college basketball tournament in late March. Golfers get their chance to put their brackets, their favorites and their upsets when the WGC Match Play Championship rolls around every year.
Parity generally reigns in the 64-player event, meaning most matches are toss ups with each player having a near equal chance of advancing. So picking the brackets with authority is a real crapshoot.
Nevertheless, I’m taking my shots here.
BOBBY JONES BRACKET: A loaded part of the bracket, where No. 3 and No. 12 seeds Hunter Mahan reside. I like Mahan to upset Mike Weir early and Tiger Woods (who knows how well that knee will hold up) in the 3rd round, and Villegas to take out Geoff Ogilvy in the third round, setting up a Mahan-Villegas bracket final that I’ll take Colombian Superman to win.
BEN HOGAN BRACKET: Vijay Singh is a shaky No.1 in this bracket, I have No. 5 Steve Stricker taking him out in the 2nd round. But the big surprise here will be No. 15 Angel Cabrera taking out No.2 Phil Mickelson on Wednesday. Stricker beats Lee Westwood to go to the Final 4.
GARY PLAYER BRACKET: Boo Weekly faces Justin Rose in the opener, and remembers the Ryder Cup and how he rolled. But other than that favorites Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Robert Karlsson and Kenny Penny advance. Garcia tops Perry to make the Final 4.
SAM SNEAD BRACKET: The upset here is Davis Love III taking out Henrik Stenson in the opener, but Anthony Kim and Padraig Harrington, match play stalwarts, reach the bracket final, with the younger Kim winning it.
In the Final Four, Villegas over Stricker, Garcia over Kim.
In the Finals, Villegas over Kim.
