A late surge from Dudley Hart forced a three-way tie for the lead of the Buick Open after the opening day of action on Thursday.

Corey Pavin set the early clubhouse pace, carding an eight-under-par round of 64 which was matched by Bo Van Pelt as events drew to a close.

However, a string of birdies on his way home - while he was actually playing the 5th, 6th and 7th holes - saw Hart move into contention and very nearly claim the outright lead.

However, his approach on his final hole - the 9th - left him a tricky putt and he took two to also finish his day on 64.

Corey Pavin, Bo Van Pelt and Dudley Hart shared the opening-round lead at 8-under 64, a shot ahead of Briny Baird and Daniel Chopra.

Woody Austin was in a group at 66. Bubba Watson was in a pack another stroke back with Charles Warren, whose had six straight birdies to tie the longest birdie-eagle streak this year on the PGA TOUR.

Jim Furyk was among a big group four shots behind the leaders.
