Overton takes 1st round lead at Turning Stone
With the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup playoffs now over (congrats to Vijay Singh and his 10 million reasons to love golf), the focus on most players now is the money list. Only the 125 money-earners will secure playing privileges on the 2009 TOUR; the rest have to go back to the stomach-churner that is the 6-round TOUR Qualifying School.
Jeff Overton, first-round leader at the Turning Stone Resort Championship in upstate New York, looks to be taking advantage of the cash grab. Overcoming cool, windy conditions, Overton, 142nd on the money list coming in, shot a 5-under 67 to take the first round lead Thursday.
In fact, the top 6 on Thursday’s leaderboard are all outside the Top 125 coming into this week. Michael Allen (132nd) and Steven Allen (167th) shot 68s and are tied for second. Jason Day (129th) , Carlos Franco (162nd) and Tag Ridings (152nd) all shot 69.
Tory Matteson (107th) and Bo Van Pelt (112th), inside the number players who can secure an ‘09 TOUR card with good showings, are tied for 7th at 70.
One player in the field will make qualifying a moot point — winners on the PGA TOUR receive a two-year exemption.
