Ogilvy’s flawless 67 leads Mercedes-Benz
Australian Geoff Ogilvy, winner of the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, made six birdies and kept his card free of bogeys on Thursday in the opening round of the opening tournament of the 2009 PGA TOUR season, the Mercedes-Benz Championship. The tournament at the Kapalua Resort in Maui, Hawaii is exclusively for winners on the 2008 TOUR. Ogilvy won the WGC-CA Championship in Florida.
Ogilvy’s round wasn’t the only good one blowing in the steady Kona winds. Ernie Els, Kenny Perry and Johnson Wagner each carding 5-under 68s on the par-73, 7,400-yard course. That group had a wild ride of a day; Wagner finished birdie-birdie-eagle, Els was 6-under thru 11 before stumbling a bit at close, and Perry had a seven hole stretch that lacked a par (eagle, 2 bogies, 4 birdies).
Davis Love III, Steve Lowery, Sean O’Hair and Ryuji Imada shot 4-under 69. Defending FedEx Cup champion Vijay Singh, who will undergo a knee procedure after the event and miss a month, shot even-par 73. Defending Mercedes champion Daniel Chopra of Sweden is tied for last after one round of 79, even though he saved it a bit with birdies on his final two holes.
