Ogilvy/Cink and Casey/Fisher in Match Play Final 4
A No. 6 seed and two No. 9 seeds joined Geoff Ogilivy, the No. 8 ranked player in the world, as qualifiers for the semifinals of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship on Saturday.
Paul Casey and Ross Fisher face off in one of the semis, assuring an Englishman a spot in the finals. Casey eliminated Shaun O’Hair 4&3 on Saturday morning. Fisher had a nip and tuck match with Justin Leonard before winning 2&1.
Ogilvy eliminated Ireland’s wunderkind, 19-year-old Rory McIlroy, 2&1 in Saturday morning’s quarterfinal. Cink, the only American left in the field, downed an erratic and balky-putting Ernie Els, 2&1. On Friday, Ogilvy took out giant-killer Tim Clark, who had eliminated Tiger Woods on Thursday in the World’s Number One’s first event since his U.S. Open victory in June.
The finals will be played in a 36-hole final on Sunday. The semifinal losers will play an 18-hole match on Sunday for third place.
