New world order dawning at WGC?
Retief Goosen leads after 36 holes of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, but you’d barely know it. Much of the talk this week has been about the 3-way battle possible for the title of World Number One.
And, the withdraw of No. 3-ranked Lee Westwood on Friday due to that bad calf muscle couldn’t quiet that. For No. 2 Phil Mickelson has found his way near the top of the leaderboard, and No. 1 Tiger Woods has sunk to the bottom of it — the recipe for a new man atop the Official World Golf Ranking list.
Should Mickelson finish fourth or better, and Woods finish 45th or worse, the lefty will take his first-ever place leading the OWGR. Mickelson, playing a brand of bash it-find it-hack it-putt it, is tied for second place at 6-under with fellow American Justin Leonard, just one off Goosen’s lead heading into Saturday play.
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods began Saturday at 6-over, 13 off the lead, in 72th place (out of 81) and has backed up further with a 4-over 39 on his opening nine Saturday.
Mickelson, until mid-day Friday, wasn’t even the low lefty in the field. Long-hitting Bubba (“Don’t Call Me Tom, Although It’d Be An Honor”) Watson, after a 64 Thursday to take the lead, he came back to the field and begins Saturday tied for 4th at 5-under with Peter Hansen and Bo Van Pelt.
