Mickelson lapped as other soar at WGC

Phil Mickelson looked to move to the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking, but that’s in a tenous spot now, as he remained stuck in neutral Saturday as the pack went flying by him at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.

The lefty shot a 1-over 71 and is tied for 10th at 5-under, 4 back of the lead after 54 holes. If he finishes Sunday in 4th place or better and Tiger Woods is worse than 45th — just about a lock since World Number One is mired in 78th place — Woods and Mickelson will swap spots in the OWGR.

Here’s the leaderboard and the scorching scores they shot Saturday to climb the leaderboard: Ryan Palmer, -9 (63), Sean O’Hair, -9 (64), Matt Kuchar, -8 (66), Ernie Els, -7 (64), Peter Hanson, -7 (68).

Hunter Mahan, Jeff Overton and Bo Van Pelt shot 66, 67 and 69, all better than Mickelson, to get to 6-under. 36-hole leader Retief Goosen triple-bogied the first hole from the middle of the fairway and never fully recovered. He’s at 5-under as well and will play with Mickelson on Sunday as the lefty tries to make history.
