Mickelson and Watney tied at the top at WGC-CA
Phil Mickelson and Nick Watney, who have already won this year on the PGA TOUR, have assured that Sunday’s final round of the World Golf Championships-CA Championship will be a shootout.
The two are tied at the top of the leaderboard at 16-under-par, and are four shots clear of the rest of the field at the Doral Blue Monster in Miami.
They will play together in Sunday’s final round, as they did on Saturday. Mickelson began the third round with a 2-shot lead over Watney, but Watney quickly erasewd that with birdies on four of the first six holes. Watney stuck with Mickelson like a grip to a shaft until the back nine, when the lefty Mickelson birdied three in a row, including a near ace on the par-3 13th, to take a 2-shot lead. But Watney (shot 67) made birdie on 16 and Mickleson (69) bogied 17, putting the pair back into a tie that will carry into what should be a thrilling Sunday in Miami.
There’s a gaggle of players stacked up right behind the two should they both falter. India’s Jeev Milkha Singh and Colombia’s Camilo Villegas are four back at 12-under. The group at 11 under includes Charley Hoffman, Soren Kjeldsen, Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry and Alvaro Quiros.
Absent from that group is Tiger Woods, who despite shooting 68 and striking the ball better than the first two days, is still fighting a balky putter. He is 7-under, 10 strokes back, tied for 19th.
