McIlroy says “Hello” to PGA … or other way around?
In his dabblings on the PGA Tour over the last year or so, 20-year-old Irishman Rory McIlroy displayed talents, and his potential, in a few high finishes. While never landing a Tour victory, he announced an arrival message of, “I’m cutting my teeth here now, and if I keep this up, I’ll soon be a dominant force on your tour.”
Well, that moment came Sunday.
After making the cut right on the number at the Quail Hollow Championship outside Charlotte, North Carolina, McIlroy fought off the doldrums. On the heels of a third-round 66 (6 under par) to get within five shots of the lead, Rory simply tore up the Quail Hollow layout to the tune of a course and tournament-record 10-under par 62 … yes, a SIXTY-TWO on a PGA Tour Sunday.
The display was of mythical proportion. He was two shots over the cut line on Friday when he hit a 4-iron from 206 yards into the breeze and right over the water to 6 feet for an eagle on his 16th hole of the day just to make the weekend.
After his near-flawless Saturday that was overshadowed only because he was so far back in the field, he caned Quail Hollow’s infamous “Green Mile” closing stretch, finishing his round five under across the final five holes and finishing with six 3s on his card. Playing the long, tight 18th hole with a four-shot lead and with plenty of discretion, he capped it all off by holing a 40-foot birdie putt.
McIlroy turns 21 on Tuesday (That ought to be a helluva party!), making him the youngest winner on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods claimed his first win in Las Vegas in 1996 at the age of 20 years, 10 months. Rory took $1.17 million for the win.
He along with the best golfers in the world will tee it up on Thursday at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Many consider The Players to be the Tour’s unofficial fifth major.
