McDowell’s 68 sets early 2nd round pace
Grame McDowell sezied the 2nd round lead early on Friday with a 68 that put him 3-under-par in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Now Northern Ireland’s best chance for victory with Rory McIlroy sucking wind, he bogied his first and last holes of the round but had six birdies to shoot the event’s low round thus far.
Ernie Els would match his 68 a few minutes later, and finished 1-under par in a tie for second as the afternoon players went out. Tied with Els are 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa (71) and American Dustin Johnson (70), winer of the last two AT&T National Pro-Ams at Pebble Beach.
First round leaders Paul Casey and Brandon De jonge fell away with 73s, and Shaun Micheel sank like a stone, following a 69 with a Friday 77.
Tiger Woods finally made birdies and shot 72 to finish 36 holes at 4-over par, seven strokes off McDowell’s lead.
By going out and posting a leading number early, he also set the cut line if nobody passes him in the afternoon, as all players within 10 shots of the lead make the cut at the U.S. Open. This means that 60-year-old Tom Watson, in likely his final U.S. Open appearance, will make the cut on the number (78-71–149). He’s joined at that mark by Sergio Garcia and Steve Stricker.
