The traditional curtain raiser to the Master the Par 3 Competition was won by Rory Sabbatini of South Africa.
The 9 hole competion is played on a nine hole course which is near the 10th Hole of the Augusta National Golf course. As the competition suggests each hole is a par 3.

Sabbatinii shot a five under par 22 to win the contest. The Par 3 competition is not a very good pointer for who will win the Masters. Actually it will almost guarantee that Sabbatini does not win the US Master, as no player who has won the par three competition has ever won the Masters in the same year.
Sabbatini was not worried about the hoodoo that the Par 3 has on the Master tournament

“I wanted to win,” Sabbatini said. “You can’t break the curse unless you’ve won the par three to begin with.”

The competition has a very relaxed atmosphere with many players having their kids caddy for them. The Par 3 is played to packed galleries, with patrons able to stand less than 10 feet from the greens.

“It’s a great way to relieve some of the stress or pressure you feel heading into a major,” was the view of Phil Mickelson , a two times masters winner, he had his son Evan on the bag.

There was a few holes in one from Paul Azinger at the second, Charles Coody on the third, Fred Couples on the seventh and Wayne Grady at the ninth.

The most lovely sight of the day was watching, masters greats Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Arnold Palmer going around together. They proved they can still play, Gary Player will be making his 51st Masters appearance this year beating Arnold Palmers record of 50 Masters perfomances. Arnold Palmer proved he can still hit a ball like the best of them, by winning the closest to the pin prize on the 1st hole. Arnold Palmer will be the honorary starter of the Masters this year.

Tiger Woods chose to sit out the contest, prefering to prepare for the big tournament away from the crowds.

After watching the Par 3 we really can’t wait for the masters to start.
