LPGA tour moves onto the Safeway International
The LGPA tour hits Superstition Mountain Arizona this week for the Safeway International presented by Coca Cola. This popular tournament is played at the picturesque Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club over the weekend of 27th to 30th March 2008 with a prize purse of $1,500,000, and the top players of LPGA tour are expected to appear.
The Safeway international was first played in 1980, however the tournament has been played at the Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club since 2004. In 2007 a record crowd of 151,000 watched the event. Since 1983 the event has help raise over $12 million for cancer charties, $1 million was raised from last years event alone.
The current champion is Mexican Lorena Ochoa, she is no stranger to Arizona having graduated from the University of Arizona. 2007 was her best year yet with 8 tournaments wins as well as the safeway international she won Ricoh Womens British Open and the CN Canadian Womens Open. Lorena was voted the Rolex Player of the year and she topped the LGPA money list in 2007.

Michelle Wie has had to withdrew from the Safeway International. She aggravated a existing wrist injury in practise on Good Friday
18 year old Wie was given a wildcard exemption by sponsors so she could play this event , and there was excitement to see her in action for her first tournament since she won the Fields Open in Hawaii by a huge 20 strokes last month. Wie is expected to be out of action for a couple of weeks.
