Lorena Ochoa looks forward to defending the Safeway International title
The Safeway International title starts today, and it is a competition very close to current titleholder Lorena Ochoa.
The world number one honed her golf skills at nearby University of Arizona. The Mexican has fond memories of her time learning the game in Arizona, an area with a huge Hispanic following.
Lorena has been quoted as saying
“It’s a place that has built me up,”
The Safeway International was also the place of one of her low points in her professional career where she let a 4 shot lead go with 3 holes left 3 years ago, but last year she came good winning the Safeway International which started a run of 8 wins in 2007 which has catapulted her to the top of the ladies rankings.
Lorena has spoken on her experience at Safeway
“I learned to lose the hard way here but I was able to win last year, Sometimes it’s tough, but you always learn a lot with the bad times. I am more comfortable now playing on Sunday, under pressure. I like that. It’s just been a growing experience. It always helps.
This could be the last year of the desert event after 26 years as Safeway are ending their sponsorship this year.
Lets hope if it is the last it is the best event yet, we will have a report on the first days play later on today.
