“Lefty” among 4 in lead at Doral
Jeev Milka Singh, Retief Goosen, Prayad Marksaeng and Phil Mickelson put the “World” in the World Golf Championships-CA Championship on Thursday at the Doral’s Blue Monster Course in sunny, palm tree-splashed Miami.
India, South Africa, Thailand and the United States are represented at the top of the leaderboard after one round as each shot 65.
Singh started slow but birdied seven of nine holes in the middle of his round. Goosen birdied five of his first eight, then birdied three in a row after a bogey to get to 65. Marksaeng started on No. 10, made the turn in 1-under, then blistered the front side for a 30. And “Lefty” (Mickelson), after double-bogeying the third hole, made eight birdies the rest of the way to join the foursome at the top.
Nick Watney, Rod Pampling, James Kingston and reigning British Open champion Padraig Harrington are a shot back after shooting 66.
Englishman Oliver Wilson came to the frightful 18th hole, playing 443 yards, at 7 under, but pushed his drive into the water and made a double-bogey to drop to 5-under 67 along with Louis Oosthuizen, Camilo Villegas, Andres Romero and Sean O’Hair.
Tiger Woods struggled with a balky putter all day and shot 71, tied for 40th. Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy, the leader of the PGA TOUR FedEx Cup standings and the defending CA Championship champion, is tied for 60th after a 1-over 73.
