Lawrie Wins Spanish Open Playoff After Garrido Has Rollercoaster Final Round
The Open de España at Real Club de Golf de Sevilla went to a nail biting playoff between Peter Lawrie and Ignacio Garrido. Lawrie finally prevailed at the second extra hole to claim his maiden European Tour title and a € 333,330 pay day.
Spain’s Garrido started the day with a disastrous front nine where he carded five bogeys and totally lost his three shot advantage, luckily for him birdies on the 10th, 12th and 18th meant he ended the round on level par, -15 for the tournament, to set up a playoff with Ireland’s Peter Lawrie who had shot a workman like five under par, 67 which included six birdies.
1st extra hole - Hole 18 (Par 4 432 yards 395 metres)
Both players hit the fairway off the tee. Peter Lawrie hit his approach shot to leave a 30 foot putt, Garrido second shot was a beaut it landed just 6 feet from the pin. Lawrie played a magnificent shot to sink his putt for birdie. Garrido also birdied meaning another hole was required.
2nd extra hole - Hole 18 (Par 4 432 yards 395 metres)
Lawrie landed tee shot in the right hand fairway bunker but found the fairway. Lawrie played his bunker shot sublimely to leave a putt of around 20 feet. Garrido pulled his second shot and the ball spun into the water hazard guarding the green. Garrido pitched to five feet from the drop zone however Lawrie rolled his putt to the edge of the hole then tapped in the claim the title.
Had Garrido won, it would have been the first time a father and son combination had ever won the same event on The European Tour as his father Antonio won the Spanish Open in 1972, just 19 days after Ignacio was born.
Miguel Angel Jiménez who was in second place going into the final day saw his challenge peter out with a triple bogey 7 on the 10th hole.
