There was plenty of excitement in the second round of the 2008 Open Golf Championship at Royal Birkdale.

Kyoung-Ju Choi (better known as KJ) enjoyed an excellent birdie, birdie finish to his second round for a 67 snatching the lead from long time leader Greg Norman.

Korean Choi who finished in a tie for eigth in last years open has a two round total of 139 just one under par.

Norman who had an early tee time enjoyed his second level par round of 70 and spent much of the day with the clubhouse lead, despite a double bogey on the sixth he went out in 33, coming home in 37, 8 pars and a bogey on 17, he is just a stroke behind Choi on level par.

In third place is Columbian Camilio Villegas who shot the best round of the day an excellent 65 which included eight birdies, including an astonishing 5 in a row from the 14th to the 18th, this great finish moves him from six over to one over.

The first round leaders Australian Robert Allenby, American Rocco Mediate and Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland all carded 3 over par 73’s and are tied for 4th place on +2 along with Jim Furyk, Alexander Noren, David Duval and, defending Champion Padraig Harrington who has played himself into contention with a 68 today.

The projected cut is 9 over par which is good news for Ernie Els who just scrapes in on +9 as does Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson enjoyed a better round today his 2 under par 68 being 11 strokes better than what he achieved on Thursday he is now on a safe +7.

Not so fortunate Vijay Singh 80 & 71 finished on +11, and the weight of Golfing News hopes and aspirations finally got to Miguel Angel Jimenez who was in contention after a 72 yesterday but lost all chance with a 12 over par 82 today. We also say goodbye to Angel Cabrera +14 and the veteran Tom Watson +10.
