Jimenez takes the lead off Watson on first day of The Open
The first day of the 138th Open Championship at Turnberry was extremely entertaining, with hardly a breath of wind scores were low, and for a long time we had a surprise leader, 59 year old Tom Watson shot an amazing 5 under par 65 the same score as in his final two rounds here 32 years ago when he was victorious in the 1977 Open the epic “Duel in the Sun” with Jack Nicklaus. Watson chalked up 5 birdies and no bogeys.
Ben Curtis later matched Watson’s tally with a very good round which included 4 birdies on the back 9.
Miguel Angel Jimenez joined the pair at the top with a birdie at the 17th then he enjoyed an amazing finish as he rolled in a colossus 40 foot putt on the 18th to take the outright lead with a faultless 64, 6 under par.. Jimenez hit the turn in a spectacular 31 then carded 7 straight pars before his final flurry.
Looking for his15th major title and 4th Open, world number one Tiger Woods had a difficult day and finished 7 strokes adrift with a round of 71, one over par. Defending dual champion Padraig Harrington ended the day at 1 under par.
