The 137th British Open Golf Championship held at Royal Birkdale has come to a thrilling conclusion.

Padraig Harrington has been crowned King of the links, winning The Open for the second year in succession.

The Irishman enjoyed a wonderful one under par 69 finishing 3 over par for the tournament with a four round total of 283, four strokes ahead of England’s Ian Poulter in second place.

Harrington parred the first six holes before three consecutive bogeys completed the front nine, however he composed himself and three more pars followed before a fine birdie on the 13th another birdie on the 15th put him in a great position but the best was to come, on the par 5 17th Harrington got a great lie from his drive and proceeded to play his approach shot off the fairway with a 5 wood, this will likely be remembered as the shot of the tournament as it landed perfectly for Padraig to make his eagle putt.

Second placed Ian Poulter like Harrington carded 69 in this final round, he had bogeys at the first and third and birdies at the 9th, 11th and 16th, the last one giving him a share of the lead at 7 over par, but this was before the Champion’s great final few holes.

Third round leader the great Greg Norman made a valiant effort today, but the gods were not on his side and the Australian carded 8 bogeys and one solitary birdie in his 7 over par round of 77 to finish 9 over par for the Championship and a share of third place.

Tied with Norman in third place came Henrik Stenson of Sweden.

Leading amateur and silver medal winner is England’s Chris Wood, who finished the tournament with a 72 comprising 5 bogeys and 3 birdies, a tournament total of 10 over par which gave him a tie for 5th with Jim Furyk of the USA who shot 71 today.

Best round of the day came from David Howell, the Englishman shot a 67 which included 4 birdies and a magnificent eagle, he finished the tournament on +12 in a 9 way tie for 7th place.
