Harrington defence of British Open in doubt as practise round cut short

Padraig Harrington’s dream of back to back open titles maybe in jeopardy as the 36 year old Irish man was unable to complete a final practise round today ( Wednesday 16th July 2008). Padraig had severe pain in his injured wrist and had to abandon his round after only 2 shots.

Padraig Harrington is desperate to try to defend his title at Royal Birkdale starting on Thursday.
Harrington has been quoted as saying

“If it wasn’t the Open I would have pulled out,” said Harrington.
“I would have had treatment and then decided I couldn’t risk it. But because it’s Open week I’ll make the effort.”

Harrington did return to the Royal Birkdale course after consulting medical advice but he was limited to just putting and short game practise.
Padraig might try to use pain killers to get him through the weekend, taking a lead from Tiger Woods heroic win at the US Open when he played through agony on his injured knee to win a 19 hole play off.

Harrington has said about the pain he is lucky to be in

“I now have to work on masking the pain and supporting the wrist as opposed to curing the pain,” said Harrington.
“I don’t think there is any danger of doing further damage to the wrist. If there was, I would stop playing.”

Harrington suffered the injury last week when he won the Irish PGA Championship, the draw of The Open has meant Harrington has continued to try to play any other event and he would have pulled out already.

Harrington tee time is scheduled to be 07:58 on Thursday morning, his first round grouping includes Justin Leonard and Retief Goosen who he will play with for the second round also.

Harrington is most concerned about playing out of thr rough . Although Harrington maybe get some comfort in that he suffered a injury just before the open at Carnoustie which meant he had to limit his practice time.
We hope Harrington is able to recover enough to defend his title this weekend.
