Green and Singh lead Irish Open 2008
There is a tie for the lead after day one of the 2008 Irish Open Golf Championship at the Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort Ireland, Australia’s Richard Green and India’s number one golfer Jeev Milkha Singh (pictured) both shot 66, 6 under par.
Singh can consider himself fortunate not to have dropped a shot on his last hole of the day, which is the courses ninth as he played the back nine first, after almost chipping in from a difficult lie in the bushes his ball scampered away from the hole to leave a 40 foot putt, with grim determination he took aim and sent the ball clean into the cup.
When reporters asked about his amazing up and down Singh said:
“When I saw the ball, I knew the first thing is to go to the referee and make sure that I could take a stance without breaking any rules because there was a chance of being penalized, so that’s why I called David Probyn in there, and he told me the way to get in there without touching anything. I was just trying to chip it out from there and it came out perfect. Missed the hole and went to about 40 feet away; I was happy with that. I said OK, I know I can make a six, but when I rolled that putt, I know it looked pretty good, like it was going in, and it did. And that’s the story of the day really - I made a lot of great up and downs today.”
Earlier in the day Richard Green enjoyed a less dramatic round where he carded 7 birdies and just one bogey, he said later that the key to his round was that he felt pretty focussed.
Defending champion Padraig Harrington shot a level par 72 which gives him a share of 30th well within reach at this early stage.
