How is the Ryder Cup European Team selected

1) The Top 5 players on the Ryder Cup World Points List
2) Then the next 5 players who have not already qualified via the Ryder Cup World Points List from the The Ryder Cup European Points List
3) The final 2 places are then made up of 2 wild card picks by the European Team Captain, Nick Faldo.

The top 4 players in the World Points Standings look pretty certain, with double major winner Padraig Harrington leading the way after his British Open and PGA Championship wins in recent weeks. The good form of Lee Westwood makes his a solid 2nd place in the world standings having done well at the British Open and the World Golf Championship in recent weeks. Sergio Garcia has amassed a lot of points following his PGA Players Championship win earlier in the season and then his 2nd place at the PGA Championship last weekend.

Martin Kaymer of Germany , is now within around 700 euros of the qualification for the Ryder Cup team, he will want to get the remaining few euros in the last 2 events.

Players bubbling under in the World Rankings include Ian Poulter who is currently 8th and will need to win or finish high in the remaining tournaments to get into the 5th place for a guaranteed pick. Poulter also has a chance to qualify via European Ryder Cup Euro points where he is currently 11th and on current standings will need to nip into 9th place to get his place on the plane for 19 Sep 21 Sep 2008 for The Ryder Cup at Valhalla GC, Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Poulter has showed good form this season and might have to rely on Nick Faldo’s Wild Card Pick, he is a really popular player and the competitive environment of the Ryder Cup should suit him.

Justin Rose has also had a up and down season, he has been in contention a few times in majors but his final rounds have let him down, and he also is fighting to get into the top 5 of the world rankings. Justin Rose stated this past weekend that he will be looking to play all events in Europe to get the neccesary points to get his Ryder Cup berth. This will mean Rose will start on 14 Aug 17 Aug at SAS Masters at Arlandastad GC, Stockholm, Sweden. then between 21 Aug 24 Aug The KLM Open Kennemer G&CC, Zandvoort, Netherlands where he made his pro debut and the final chance then on weekend of 28 Aug 31 Aug Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

  1. Just to pass a comment on the above, Faldo will have to select Justin Rose if he does not qualify automatically and having watched all of the P.G.A. last week, Paul Casey looks like running into a bit of form at the right time as well. Ian Poulter may well be the one to lose out as his general play is very erratic at present.
