England, Japan, Italy on top at Players
The Players Championship may be just that for the PGA Tour, but it’s turning out to be a showcase of the whole world’s best, solidifying it’s reputation as “Golf’s 5th Major” — or even better than that.
Lee Westwood of England surged into the lead on Friday at 12-under-par 132 with a solid 65, which tied for he best round of the day. Who’d he tie with? Itlay’s Frncesco Molinari also shot 65, and he’s tied in second one back of Westwood at 11-under with Japan’s Ryuji Imada (67-66–133). Reigning U.S. Open champ Lucas Glover also shot a 65 and is 9-under in a group tied for 4th place.
First-round leader J.B. Holmes shot an even-par 72 and watched the field pass him by; he’s tied for 17th.
World Number One Tiger Woods appears to hold on to that title through this week. His 71 put him 3-under and tied for 44th, but Phil Mickelson, who could pass Woods with a win and some help, also finished 3-under and mired back in the pack.
