Drama expected in today’s Open final round
When Phil Mickelson shot his stellar 66 in the second round fo the U.S. Open, everyone thought that the California native would dominate the weekend at Pebble Beach. But the lefty stopped hitting fairways and ballooned to a 73 on Saturday.
Game over? Far from it.
Enter Mr. Eldrick Woods.
Tiger, who bogied the 2nd and 3rd holes, answered with birdies on 4,5 and 6, then birdied the final 3 holes to roar back and shoot a masterful 66 to get to 3rd place. He punctuated the round with a massive 3-wood second shot into the diabolical 18th hole that split two bunkers and rolled onto teh green.
But Tiger wasn’t the only one shooting fireworks on Satuday. Dustin Johnson, who’s won the last two PGA Tour events held at Pebble Beach (the AT&T National Pro-Am), matched Woods’ 66, thanks to big drives, and an eagle on the par-4 fourth hole after driving the green. He birdied 17 and 18 to get to 6-under par, giving up a three-shot lead as today’s nerve-packed final round begins.
Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell must’ve been wondering, “What on Earth is goin on around me?” on Saturday. He began Saturday with a one-shot lead and shot a level-par 71, normally a great score on Open Saturday. Hit one-shot lead transformed into a 3-shot deficit, and he’ll feel the hot breath of Tiger Woods on his neck when he tees off in the final round in the final group with Johnson.
