Deutsche Bank Championship preview

If the next 3 events in the PGA TOUR’s playoffs are anything like the first, then here’s some advice: turn on the golf, ditch the remote control, and go get your popcorn.

After Vijay Singh nipped Sergio Garcia in a playoff at last week’s The Barclays, the TOUR hopes there’s more drama to be sold at this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, held at the TPC of Boston in Boston, Massachusetts.

With the win, Singh leapfrogged to the top spot in the FedEx Cup points race. The winner after next month’s TOUR Championship will take home a shiny trophy and a cool $10 million payout. The eligible contestants were trimmed from the top 144 in the points standings to the top 120 entering this week. On Sunday, the field that will move on to next week’s BMW Championship will be trimmed again to the top 70. That creates a “tournament within a tournament” of sorts this week in Boston, with a bigger handful of players “on the bubble” than last week.

Those competing and needing to make the cut and finish high include No. 71 Luke Donald (just 4 points out of 70th), Aaron Baddely (73), Fredrik Jacobson (74), Retief Goosen (82), Rocco Mediate (86), Ian Poulter (89) and Fred Couples (118). At No. 119, the situation should be familiar to two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen; he was No. 144 heading into The Barclays, and earned another week of play with a good finish.
