Clark surges to Deutsche Bank lead with 62
Tim Clark flirted with shooting a 59 in Saturday’s second round of the PGA TOUR Deutsche Bank Championship, but he’ll have to settle for taking a one-shot lead into the third round.
South Africa’s Clark was 6-under for the day when he reached the par-5 2nd hole, his 11th hole of the day. He rolled in an eagle putt, then eagled the 4th, and after a birdie on the par-5 7th he stood 11-under for the day, needed just to birdie one of the two remaining holes to card a 59. But he bogied his last two holes, and his 62 left him at 14-under par, one clear of Canada’s Mike Weir, who followed Friday’s 61 with a 68.
Ben Curtis, who shot a second 65, and Vijay Singh (64-66) are two strokes back at 12-under 130. Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Kevin Streelman and Ernie Els are in a group at 11-under.
The cut for the weekend came at 2-under par, attributed to soft greens and a general lack of wind over the TPC of Boston course. Noteables missing the cut were Padraig Harrington (for the second straight week), Paul Casey, Retief Goosen and Ian Poulter.
