Cink Wins The Open Championship 2009 After Playoff (British Open)

American Stewart Cink recorded his biggest ever win in the 2009 Open at Turnberry.

Cink recorded a 69 in the final round after a birdie on the 18th to set up a 4 hole playoff with veteran Tom Watson who just missed out winning in regulation play when he bogeyed the 18th.

59 year old Watson was clearly feeling the strain of the grueling four days play as errors crept into his game, on the first playoff hole (the 5th) Cink got his par while Watson dropped a shot, both parred the short 6th hole but the wheels came off for Watson on the 3rd hole of the playoff when he took 7 on the easy par 5 17th while Cink recorded a fine birdie. After that the fourth and final playoff hole (18th) was merely a formality but while Watson bogeyed again the newly crowned Champion finished in true Championship style with another birdie.

Alas no fairytale ending for Watson but a deserved and some whould say long overdue major win for Cink.

Two Englishmen Lee Westwood and Chris Wood tied for third place.
