Can a Brit win The Open
Its 10 long years since a golfer from the home nations lifted the famous Claret Jug in The Open Championship, or simply The Open (often referred to as the British Open outside the UK), Scotland’s Paul Lawrie was that man, this year we are not without chances, a trio of Englishmen are currently in the world top 20 and any one of them could honestly have his glory day.
Paul Casey at 3 in the world is on fire this year heading the European money list being one of only two top pros to win three tournaments this season, the other is one Tiger Woods.
17 in the world is Lee Westwood who has hit form at the right time coming a close 2nd in the French Open a couple of weeks ago.
We must not forget Ian Poulter just one place behind Westwood in the rankings he just missed out to dual champion Pádraig Harrington in last years event at Royal Birkdale.
Other Brits with a live chance this year are Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy who finished 10th in the US Open, Ross Fisher 5th in the same event, Luke Donald may find the course plays to his strengths of good putting and straight hitting, Nick Dougherty is another hitting form at the right time having won the BMW International recently
The Open 2009 tees off on Thursday morning at the beautiful Ailsa links course at Turnberry in Scotland.
