GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Michigan — Corey Pavin, the 1994 Buick Open runner-up, made eight birdies in a bogey-free round of 8-under-par 64 to take the early clubhouse lead in the $5-million Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.

It was Pavin’s second straight round of 64. He also shot 64 in the final round of last week’s Travelers Championship to tie for 10th place, his best finish in 12 events this season.

“I played well last week,” said Pavin, who finished second to Fred Couples in 1994. “I played well today. My putter was working well. I made some nice mid-range putts and one bomb.”

Pavin tied for 62nd last year and tied for 40th in 2006, one week after he won the U.S. Bank Championship for the last of his 15 PGA Tour victories.

Pavin, 48, captured his only major championship at the 1995 U.S. Open.

Perry won the Memorial Tournament at the start of June which arrived close on the heels of his second place at the AT&T Classic, with the 47-year-old targeting a Ryder Cup place in September.

Heath Slocum is another American who has been collecting top 10s recently with four of these from his last seven starts.

The golfer from Louisiana has not won a Tour event since the Southern Bureau Classic in 2005 and, in this same year, Slocum finished tied for eighth at the Buick.

Tom Pernice Jnr shared 13th spot at the Travelers last week and the 1999 Buick Open winner, boasts two top 30 finishes on subsequent visits to Michigan.

Chris DiMarco can harp back to past experiences at the Warwick Hills course to ensure his revival continues this week.

This determined American crashed to 107th on the money list last year and he underwent shoulder surgery in September following a skiing accident earlier in the campaign.

DiMarco tied for 13th in Connecticut and also finished in a respectable position at the Crowne Plaza Invitational during May.

The former Open runner-up has finished second at the Buick Open on two occasions and he registered another top 20 in 2005.
