Big Easy Out: Ernie Els Withdraws from the Shell Houston Open
Yesterday Ernie Els announced that he was withdrawing from this weeks Shell Houston Open due to contracting a virus.
Els expressed bitter disappointment as the tournament was to have been vital preparation for his US Masters bid.
This was the statement issued by Els yesterday:
“I am very disappointed to have been forced to make this decision because I was really looking forward to playing this week. The Shell Houston Open was going to be an important part of my buildup toward the Masters, but I have been advised that it would not be in my best interests to play.”
Els had planned to play five out of six weeks on the PGA Tour to prepare for the Masters, but circumstances have conspired against him and he has only managed three tournaments. He started the campaign in style by winning The Honda Classic then missed the cut the following week at Innisbrook before withdrawing from the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to fatigue.
