Another Record Tumbles As McGinley Extends Lead At Wentworth

Paul McGinley came home in a stunning 31 picking up six shots on the back nine finishing the day with a 66 as he built on his first round lead in the 2008 BMW PGA Championship on the West course at Wentworth.

The Irishman who started the day with a bogey at the first picked up strokes with birdies at four and seven before a second bogey at the ninth meant he hit the turn at level par on the day, from the tenth onwards everything slotted into place four more birdies and a magnificent eagle 3 on the eighteenth gives McGinley a four shot lead at the halfway stage he now stands at -13, a new tournament record 36 hole score of 131.

Second spot is shared by England’s Miles Tunncliff and Robert Karlsson of Sweden on 9 under par, Tunncliff had an amazing seven under par round of 65, including seven birdies and an eagle, equaling the course record set by McGinley on Thursday, Karlsson ended his round in style by birdieing the last three holes for a 69, -3 for the round.

A record equaling round of 65 was also scored by Denmark’s Søren Kjeldsen who is tied for fourth, on 8 under, along with Oliver Wilson of England and Australian Marcus Fraser.

Ernie Els +4 and Justin Rose +5 are two of big names that missed the cut. Lee Westwood withdrew from the tournament after five holes of the second round due to a virus.
