Allenby cards 66 in afternoon at Players
Robert Allenby carded a 66 in the afternoon wave of tee times in the first round at The Players Championship at a vulnerable TPC Sawgrass course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Allenby, from Australia, was 7 under coming in but bogied his 17th hole of the day, the 183-yard 8th, to match the 6-under par round that American J.B. Holmes put up in the morning wave.
Japan’s Ryuji Imada start the tournament on the 410-yard par-4 10th — and started it well by holing out from the fairway for an eagle. He finished among eight golfers at 67, a shot off the lead. England’s Lee Westwood is in that group after fashioning a steady 67.
Then there’s That Guy. Tiger Woods parred his first eight holes, got it to 3-under, but bogied the long, damp 18th hole to shoot a 70, the same number that Phil Mickelson churned out in the morning. The lefty can pass Woods to reach the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings if he wins and Tiger placed outside the top five.
In all, 86 players broke par Thursday at Sawgrass, which has sparse rough due to a cold winter, saw little wind and had receptive greens thanks to a rainstorm on Tuesday night.
