3 Share British Open Golf Lead On Difficult Day
Weather conditions were horrendous this morning as the 137th Open Golf Championship got under way at the Royal Birkdale Golf Course, Southport, Lancashire.
The lead on this difficult day is shared by Australian Robert Allenby, American Rocco Mediate and last weeks Scottish Open hero Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland, this trio were the only three golfers to break par finishing one under on 69.
Bit of an Australia day though with two more from down under tied for 4th place just one shot off the lead on level par, they are the Great White Shark Himself Greg Norman (winner in 1986 and 1993) and world number four Adam Scott, also level fort the day was American Bart Bryant.
With 8 players on one over par and a further 12 on two over things are very tight, amongst those on two over are tournament favourite Sergio Garcia and Golfing News pick Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Players who had a total nightmare today include the unfortunate Sandy Lyle who retired from the tournament after ten holes when he was on 11 over, Phil Mickelson who shot 9 over and Ernie Els 10 over.
