Leaders leaking like BP at U.S. Open
As the U.S Open moves to the back nine on Sunday, a clear front runner has emerged: Graeme McDowell.
The Northen Irishman is the only one of the leaders who hasn’t fallen away, and is 2-under par after bogies at Nos. 9 and 10. Dustin Johnson dramatically exited the lead early in a triple bogey-double bogey-bogey stretch on Nos. 2-4, and while he’s steadied himself he makes the turn four strokes back after starteing the day with a three-shot lead.
Tiger Woods has found the coastal-course fescues and has five bogies against just one birdie in the first 10 holes and is +3, 6 strokes back. Frenchman Gregory Havret has played steady golf despite being paired with Tigert for the first time ever, and is level par within striking distance of McDowell.
Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson, after both getting into red numbers, have fallen back a bit and are one-over par.
It appears that if McDowell were to retreat back to the field, then there will be one whale of a battle for the win down the stretch. With a dearth of bridie opportunities on the back nine, eight pars to close might be enough for the Irishman to hoist the trophy.
