Quartet of 70s lead early at U.S. Open
So what have we learned through the opening tee times of the opening round at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach?
That there’s birdies to be made out there, especially on the front nine, but there are and will be many, many, many more bogies.
In first half of Thursday’s draw, the lowest score posted were 1-under 70s by Canadian Mike Weir, Korean K.J. Choi, Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-bello and England’s Ian Poulter. They all had at least three birdies — Poulter was the steadiest of the group with 13 pars. Choi and Weir climbed to 3-under with the clubhouse in sight but stumbled over the closing holes. Choi shook off a rough bogey-double bogey start on No. 1 & 2 and ran off six birdies over an 11-hole stretch.
Luke Donald shot the only even-par 71 among the morning golfers. Jim Furyk was in a group with 72 and Padraig Harrington carded a 73. Among big favorites, Phil Mickelson failed to register a birdie and shot a 4-over 75. Australian Geoff Ogilvy struggled even mightier, shooting 79.
