-10 leads on first day of PGA TOUR stop in Las Vegas
The desert is mostly populated by scaly, thorny critters, like gila monsters and scorpions.
But the deserts of Las Vegas are populated with birds and eagles this week. And PGA TOUR pros are finding them — at the TPC of Summerlin in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Childrens Hospitals Open.
Zach Johnson and Marc Turnesa each made 10 birdies on the way to shooting matching 10-under 62s, good for the lead. Turnesa, currently 138th on the TOUR money list, is hoping for a good finish that will get him in the top 125, which guarantees his playing privileges next year.
But a ton of players shot near-equally low rounds on a day the average score was 68.84, better than 3-under. Michael Allen (No. 135 on the money list), Nick Watney (117), Matt Kuchar and Ken Duke all shot 63s. Kevin Na, John Mallinger, Chez Reavie and Nick Flanagan fired 64s.
Ryder Cuppers Hunter Mahan and Chad Campbell each shot 65, along with England’s Brian Davis. Scotland’s martin Laird, sitting right on the TOUR’s bubble number (No. 125) shot a 67 and is tied for 30th.
